Graham’s Law of Second Chances
A friendly bet
“I could caddy for you.”
“Kitten,” I say, reaching for Lauren’s hand. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Charlie in the back seat. She smirks at me, but I am trying to be serious, because the Graham’s are nothing if not serious. Clearing my throat, I focus on Lauren. “Your dad specifically asked if William and I could play a round of golf and give you some girl time with your mom. Besdies, you don’t evrn like golf.”
“I could learn.” She turns away, staring out the window of my truck, telling me she’s out of arguments. If she had one, Lauren would gladly keep this discussion going.

“Becs, I really don’t think he’s going to fall for this,” I say, holding the light weight styrofoam. Turning the round, painted pieces over in my hands, it’s like holding a piece of cardboard, nothing like the barbell weight it’s made to look like.
Rebecca Moss grins. “Oh, it will work, Chief. Nothing fools a man quicker than his own ego.”
“Is that the last of the boxes?” I ask from the kitchen.
“Yeah, Dad,” Mari answers, marching by on her way to her new room.
Lily comes in carrying another box.
“Lily, is the truck empty?”
“Almost,” she says in a mousy voice.
Lily has been quiet since we started packing up the house. Neither of my twins had much to say about moving into Sarah’s cottage. They spend more time here than they do at our old home anyway, but I can tell something is troubling Lily. She’s always soft spoken, thoughtful, and in general less opinionated than Mari, but lately, especially today, she’s more withdrawn.
